Sometimes Klee used colour very methodically, according to specific colour theories. Sometimes the choice of colour was closely tied to the subject matter, and the colours intensify feelings or associations. In the painting “Glass Façade,” Klee combines all of this into a composition that glows from within. He used blue, red, pink, green, and orange, which are surrounded by brown. With its fields of colour surrounded by thick black lines, the work looks like colourful stained-glass. Reminiscent of a church window, it has a certain mystical quality.
“In this realm I cannot be grasped at all. For I live just as well with the dead as the unborn. Somewhat closer to the heart of creation than usual, but far from close enough.”
Paul Klee, 1920
