Klee completed his training as a painter in 1902 – or to be more precise: he dropped out. Klee’s classical academic training in Munich left him baffled. So, he decided to continue his studies independently. Back in Bern, he attended anatomical lectures and made highly detailed studies of body parts. For example, Klee used subtle shading in a drawing of a thigh with its muscles exposed. The line serves to depict an object as accurately as possible and to convey its physical and material qualities.
