Guide ZPK: Fokus. Klee the Musical

My beloved is and was music, and I only embrace the oil-scented goddess of the brush because she is my wife.
Paul Klee to Hans Bloesch, 20 November, 1898

Music was a form of relaxation and a source of inspiration for Paul Klee. As a child, he learned to play the violin and as a teenager, he deliberated for a long time about whether to become a musician or a painter. Even after he had decided to become a painter, Klee
remained true to his instrument for the rest of his life. He played chamber music with his wife, Lily, who was a pianist, as well as string quartets with a group of musician friends. An extensive collection of sheet music reveals the breadth of Paul and Lily Klee’s musical repertoire. They also attended concerts and the opera regularly and built an impressive record collection.

Paul Klee attempted to translate musical principles into visual art. Rhythm, beat, melody, and polyphony are central concepts in his art, and symbols from musical notation likewise found their way into his work.
