Fokus. Gego

Gertrud Goldschmidt (1912 in Hamburg – 1994 in Caracas), known by her artist name “Gego,” is a pioneer of modern art in Latin America. Raised in Germany, Goldschmidt received her education as an engineer and architect in Stuttgart. In 1939, she emigrated to Venezuela and began working as an artist in the 1950s.

At the core of Gego’s work is drawing and the exploration of space. Initially, during her education, she understood drawing primarily as a technical method for design and draughtsmanship. Later, influenced by artists such as Paul Klee, Anni and Josef Albers, or Naum Gabo, she broke away from the rules of technical and architectural drawing and rediscovered drawing as a form of free artistic experimentation and invention.

In the spirit of the abstract art movements of the 1960s, her artistic practice evolved into a playful engagement with geometry, structures and networks, space and movement, transparency and perception. Like other important representatives of abstract art in Latin America, such as the Brazilian artist Lygia Clark or the Venezuelan artists Jesús Rafael Soto and Alejandro Otero, Gego aimed to expand the traditional boundaries of art and give form to the spirit of innovation and progress of her time.

Gego’s sculptures and installations are not closed, heavy, standing objects but light, floating, permeable, and often immersive structures that can be experienced from a variety of perspectives—and can also be understood as drawings in space. The drawings, watercolours, prints, leporellos, and small sculptures shown in this exhibition are both independent works and drawing and sculptural experiments in relation to the large spatial installations that Gego realized in various locations. They provide insight into Gego’s artistic process and her diverse engagement with drawing.

The artist's works can be divided into various groups, each of which she worked on over several years.
