Few subjects feature as prominently in Anne Loch’s work as the rose – whether red, yellow or pink, as in this painting. It would be easy enough to dismiss an image like this as kitsch. But this was precisely one of Loch’s key concerns: she treated all of her subjects with an open mind and without any preconceptions; all things seemed equally important to her – whether a majestic mountain or a kitschy rose. According to the artist, in the act of painting, the subject matter disappears, and all that remains is painting itself.
