Anne Loch was constantly experimenting with different painting techniques. In this painting of a “Heugümper” (a Swiss German term for “grasshopper”), she applied layers of varnish and gouache atop each other like a glaze. This imbues the shimmering surface with a sense of organic motion. When applying the final layer of brown varnish, Loch painted around the silhouette of the meticulously studied, slender insect, allowing it to finally emerge from the paper.
