“I’m a constructivist!”

With these words from her diary, Anne Loch sought to distance herself from the emotionally charged, freely rendered works of her peers, which are considered “Neo-Expressionism”. This series of abstract paintings, which Loch also described as “columns”, reveals the artistic construction process: the artist imbued a monochrome surface with a rhythmic quality using a number of rectangles. The viewer’s gaze is drawn to the surface, which feels three-dimensional and animated despite its lack of colour. The work is characterised not by emotionality and spontaneity, but rather by meticulous planning and design.
